Kia ora! My name is Emily Sakai. I'm the artist behind Podge Creations, a space where Māori culture and modern creativity come together through art—born and raised in Te Kao, in the Far North of Aotearoa (NZ). I am currently based in Tokyo, Japan, newly married, and working at an International School.

My work is grounded in deep respect for our traditions and stories, while also looking forward—reimagining how Māori art can evolve, connect, and thrive in today’s world.

I create with the belief that art is a form of whakapapa—a way to honour where we come from, and to invite others into the journey. Whether you're deeply rooted in te ao Māori or discovering it for the first time, I want my work to spark curiosity, create meaningful conversations, and encourage a deeper appreciation of Māori culture.

Guided by the whakataukī “Ruia, ruia, tahia, tahia…”, I see each piece as a way of clearing the ground—making space for identity, pride, and understanding to grow. Through visual storytelling, cultural symbolism, and high-quality craftsmanship, Podge Creations stands humbly as a bridge between the past and the future, inviting everyone to learn, reflect, and connect.

こんにちは！エミリー・サカイと申します。私はPodge Creationsのアーティストで、マオリ文化と現代的な創造性がアートを通じて融合する場所を作っています。ニュージーランド北端のテ・カオで生まれ育ちました。現在は日本の東京に住んでおり、新婚で、インターナショナルスクールで働いています。

私の作品は、伝統と物語への深い敬意を土台にしつつ、未来に向けて—マオリアートがどのように進化し、人と人をつなぎ、今の時代に生きるかを再構築する取り組みです。

私は、アートは** whakapapa（血筋や系譜）**の一つの形であり、私たちがどこから来たのかを称え、その旅に他の人を招く手段だと信じています。マオリの世界観「te ao Māori」に深く根ざしている方も、初めて触れる方も、私の作品を通して好奇心を持ち、対話を生み、マオリ文化への理解が少しでも深まればと願っています。

「Ruia, ruia, tahia, tahia…（撒いて、掃いて…）」というマオリのことわざに導かれながら、私はひとつひとつの作品を「土をならす」ようなものだと考えています。そこにアイデンティティ、誇り、そして理解が芽生える余地をつくるのです。
視覚的なストーリーテリング、文化的シンボル、高品質な仕上がりを通して、Podge Creations は過去と未来をつなぐ「架け橋」でありたいと願っています。すべての人に、学び、思いをめぐらせ、つながる機会を届けます。
